This week’s MindSpark™ from DISCOVERING AI helps your family think about AI tools the same way you already think about movies, games, and media: not everything is right for every child at every age.
Some movies are rated G. Some are PG. Some are PG-13. Some are R. Some are simply not appropriate for children at all.
AI tools are similar.
Some are simple and safe enough for independent use. Some are better with a parent nearby. Some may be a fit for older students, and some may not belong in your home right now.
The goal is not to use every AI tool. The goal is to help your child build judgment.
How It Works
Step 1: Set the Scene
Remind your family that you already make decisions about movies, shows, games, apps, and websites based on age, maturity, content, and family values. AI tools deserve the same thoughtful conversation.
You might say:
“Just like not every movie is right for every child, not every AI tool is right for every age or situation. Our family gets to decide what fits our values, what requires guidance, and what is not okay for now.”
Step 2: Create Your Family AI Ratings
Use these categories as your guide:
Rated G: Okay on My Own
This tool is generally okay for independent use within our family rules.Rated PG: Parent Guidance Suggested
This tool is okay to use, and I should ask questions or check in as needed.Rated PG-13: Parent Nearby
This tool may be useful, and it requires an adult nearby or clear permission first.Rated R: Restricted
This tool is only for older students, special situations, or school-approved use.Rated NC-17: Not for Children in Our Home
This tool is not appropriate for our child right now.
Step 3: Rate These 10 AI Tools Together
For each tool, ask:
What rating would we give this tool in our home?
Does this tool require an adult nearby?

Why It Works
It Makes AI Concrete
Children already understand that different media has different ratings. This gives families a simple way to talk about AI maturity, trust, and readiness.
It Builds Judgment
Instead of labeling all AI as good or bad, children learn to ask better questions: What does this tool do? What information does it collect? Could it affect my learning, privacy, emotions, or relationships?
It Creates Shared Language
“Is this Rated G or PG-13 in our home?” makes it easy to start conversations as new tools appear.

Parent Tip
Do not stress about getting the ratings “right.” The conversation is what matters most. Your child’s explanation might reveal more than the rating itself. Ask, “Why would you rate it that way?” and listen for their reasoning.

Draw five columns: Rated G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17. As your family talks about new tools, add them to your guide. This is a practical first step in building your FAMILY AI GAME PLAN™.
