MindSpark #33: AI Red Light, Green Light

On Wednesday, our newsletter looked at why AI literacy is the new street smarts for families. Today, we are putting that insight into action.

This week’s MindSpark from DISCOVERING AI helps your child practice safety and judgment in a positive way. We want to help children build "stop and think" habits before sharing, trusting, or acting on what an AI says.

How It Works

Step 1: Set the Scene: Explain that just like crossing a busy street, sometimes we need to pause and check. We must do this before we “go” with anything AI suggests, generates, or asks.

Step 2: Play AI Red Light, Green Light: As a family, brainstorm everyday situations where you or your child might use AI. This could include homework help, asking questions, using a chatbot, or creating art. For each situation, have your child decide:

💠Green Light: Safe to proceed. An example is: "AI helped me brainstorm story ideas, and I checked them myself."

💠Yellow Light: Caution, check with someone or a trusted source. An example is: "AI gave me an answer for a science project, so should I double check it?"

💠Red Light: Stop, do not proceed. Examples include: "AI asks for personal information," or "AI suggests something that feels wrong, unkind, or unsafe."

Step 3: Make it Personal: Invite your child to share a recent time they used or wanted to use AI. Would they call it a green, yellow, or red light situation? What made them choose that?

💠Builds Concrete Habits: This playful activity gives children a memorable framework for pausing and assessing risk or trust. It mirrors real world safety skills perfectly.

💠Encourages Judgment: It helps them see AI as a tool that requires judgment and thoughtfulness, instead of just an automatic “go.”

Parent Tip

Model the process by sharing your own examples. Think aloud as you decide if an AI situation feels green, yellow, or red. Encourage your child to explain their thinking for each traffic light.

💠 What would help move a yellow light to a green light?

💠 How can our family support each other when a red light comes up?

Family Extra

Create a simple “AI Traffic Light” poster for your home or device. Use it as a reminder to pause, think, and talk before taking action on anything AI related.
