MindSpark #32: “Can Your Child ‘Coach’ the AI”

Our Wednesday newsletter explored why AI readiness is no longer optional. Here’s a simple, family-friendly MindSpark to help your child build confidence with AI, always following your rules and guidance.

How It Works

Step 1:
Invite your child to choose a fun or open-ended question. Anything from “What makes a good friend?” to “How could we make summer more fun?” Have them answer it themselves first, in writing, drawing, or by talking it out.

Step 2:
Enter the same question into an AI tool together. Read the AI’s answer and compare it with your child’s response.

Step 3:
Now switch roles: Ask your child to “coach” the AI. What did the AI miss? How could they rephrase or add details to get a more thoughtful answer? Try entering a new, improved prompt and see how the response changes.

Why It Works

This activity puts your child in charge of the technology, not the other way around. It helps them see that their questions, ideas, and creativity can shape what AI delivers. Kids learn that the quality of an answer often depends on the quality of the question.

Parent Tip

Let your child take the lead in both asking and refining questions. Encourage them to notice where their thinking made the AI’s answer better. Remind them that humans set the standard for what is valuable, even when technology is involved.

Family Reflection

After you’ve tried the activity, take a few minutes to talk:

💠 What surprised your child about the AI’s answer?
💠 What changed when they improved their question or prompt?
💠 How did it feel to “teach” or “coach” the AI?

Family Extra
